On A "Solar" Clock

I am struck this time of the year by sunlight both early and late. It is strange how going to work at the same time can feel so much different based on whether the sun is up or not. Like clockwork I am on the shuttle to work every morning at 6:40. This time of the year with the solstice approaching, the sun has already been up over an hour. I feel like I am going to work later.

It is the same on the other end of the day as well. I feel like I have a great deal of extra time because it is light so late.

This all means that in many ways I have more energy earlier- and later. In some ways it is odd how that happens. In some ways it is a change in perspective, of course. We asscoiate light with day and dark with night. Therefore when it is still dark at 7:30 in the morning and is dark by 5:00 in the afternoon, "night" is longer and "day" shorter.

My guess is that somewhere inside our cells and brains and our very natural human nature is a "solar" clock. I know I am not the first to see that, of course. Our internal clocks are historically and evolutionally based on being able to work in the day. There are probably also things like vitamins that come from sunlight. Not to mention the fact that sunlight is energy. Who's to say it doesn't infuse us.

But enough of the science and possible science and just plain conjecture. I am glad for summer. I am glad for sunlight. And most mornings, this old night person is glad to be up early enough to see it, even in the summer.
