In Memoriam: Peter O'Toole

One of the great actors of all time- who never won an Academy Award, Peter O'Toole, died yesterday at age 81.

O'Toole achieved stardom in 1962 playing T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia and then went on to become a highly honoured film and stage actor. He was nominated for eight Academy Awards – for Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Becket (1964), The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980), My Favorite Year (1982) and Venus (2006) – and holds the record for the most Academy Award acting nominations without a win. He won four Golden Globes, a BAFTA and an Emmy, and was the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award in 2003.

Sidenote: We were talking to a friend at church yesterday about the AFI's 100 greatest movies. (Lawrence of Arabia is #5) So I went and looked at the list and was pleasantly surprised how many of them I have seen. Nine of the top 10, 39 of the top 50 and 64 of the top 100. Perhaps my not so big a surprise is that I have never seen Gone With the Wind which is #4. One of these days, maybe.
