This Made Me Sad
9:15 EDT. Tuesday....
A quote leading the Yahoo! News story last evening put it this way:
The bond between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers appears to be broken beyond repair. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday evening that after approximately six hours of what he called "brutally honest" conversations with Favre over the past two days, the three-time MVP just isn't in the right mind-set to be part of the team.I suppose we will never know the real story behind all this soap opera drama between Brett and the Packers. There are probably more issues than we can ever imagine, especially since I can't imagine sitting and talking all those endless hours simply about whether Favre wants to play football.
McCarthy talked about emotional wounds that may not be healed. (Not knowing the specifics, I would guess they are still too new or raw.) McCarthy then said:
"The football team's moving forward. "The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want. He needs to jump on the train and let's go. Or, if we can't get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving."I know no one is all innocent or all guilty in this. But anytime a historic relationship like this ends like this, one feels sad- especially the fans. As a fan of Packers football I would have loved to see it all end with the sadness of nostalgia and not of woundedness. But then football, in the end even Packers football, is just another example of the bigger issue called life. Greed and fear and the overwhelming desire to win and perhaps not grow up or keep the glory going are all part of who we are as people.
Whatever happens next, short of a miracle return to the Packers and a patching of the rift, it will be sad.
