A 40-Year Memory - Oppression Returns

August 20, 1968 - The Prague Spring of political liberalization ends, as 200,000 Warsaw Pact troops and 5,000 tanks invade Czechoslovakia.
Long before the Berlin Wall fell there were several different attempts to move into democracy. This one, in 1968, looked so promising. But then came August and the tanks and troops moved into the country to settle things back down.

I wonder if perhaps a disclaimer is needed: Any resemblance to events 40 years later in the Republic of Georgia is purely coincidental.

1968 was such a pivotal year here in the U.S. and around the world. Prague Spring scared the Soviets with talk of "Socialism with a Human Face." I imagine, though, that had the Czech's pulled it off then, the West would have been more frightened by that success then by the tanks rolling down the streets of Prague.
