Now What for the Democrats?

Well, it seems clear now that Sen. McCain will be the nominee. Mitt Romney has "suspended" his campaign in order, he says, to make sure they can beat the Democrats in November. I guess he felt that a drawn-out battle would hurt rather than help the GOP to victory.

Where does that leave the Dems? Some of the pundits were talking yesterday that a prolonged campaign- that now seems likely- between Hillary and Barack would hurt either of their chances in the Fall. The word is that perhaps Democratic Party chair Dean would sit down with the two after the primaries finish up to make sure that a brokered convention wouldn't turn into back room deals and hurt the party.

My first reaction was that considering the track record of the pundits so far, the opposite will probably happen. I don't see the Democrats splintering- Barack and Hillary are too close on most issues. Yet, McCain is popular and has the ability to pull across party lines. Perhaps if Clinton and Obama keep from attacking each other and simply present their unique talents and programs and continue to attack the Republicans instead the splintering may not happen.

But then again, as the example of Loose Cannon Bill Clinton showed, anything can happen to upset the apple cart.

And, among my fears, the Democrats over the past decade have shown an incredible ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Nothing is finished. There is a long way to go. At the moment I don't see them folding, but hey, it's happened. And the interesting aspects of it all continue.

Note: No, I am not going to turn this into a political blog. I have too many other interests and things I want to write about. But for the moment it is so interesting and even exciting, I just can't help myself. Oooops. That sounds like the need for recovery from political addiction. I am powerless over.....

Keep it up. I live Down Under, the election process and outcome has nothing to do with me, but I'm still intrigued!
