"So that history can blaze its path!"
And then there were two: Barack and Hillary.
Yesterday John Edwards stepped out of the presidential race, as he said, "so that history can blaze its path." We now know that in all likelihod the Democrats will nominate someone who is from a group that has never, NEVER been nominated to run for president in the history of the United States.
Think about that for a moment- Democrat or Republican or Independent.
Think about that whether you love or hate one of the candidates, or are turned off to the whole political show.
Think about that as we watch the months ahead unfold in ways that no one could have though possible even six-months ago.
Wow. WOW!
It is exactly 40 years in April since the death of Dr. King and 40 years in June since the death of Bobby Kennedy. One generation. The Baby Boomers were coming into their own- only to have the hopes and dreams of a "new generation" be dashed that year for a second and third time by assassins' bullets. Now the leading edge of the Baby Boomers- one generation later- are heading out of our own. And once again we have in either of the Democratic candidates a vision of the possibilities only vaguely sensed in 1968.
One generation later and a woman and a Black American are running for president and stand a good chance of winning.
P.S. Let me not forget the Republicans where it is, for all practical purposes down to two as well- McCain and Romney. Neither of these candidates holds the revolutionary nature of Barack and Hillary, but each, in their own way will contribute to a sea-change in the political culture. McCain, less ideological than Romney has a proven record of being a collaborator across the aisle. Romney may represent that last movement of Regan Republicanism.
Yes the world of American politics is about to change. It should continue to be interesting!
