If It Were Me, I'd Be Fired
I don't care what they knew. If they knew anything even slightly "overly friendly" or just a little "naughty," they are as guilty as ex-Congressman Foley if they didn't report it. If I knew something like that about a colleague and didn't report it to the proper authorities- I'd be fired. So would the person who did it.

"Overly friendly" and slightly "naughty" emails between a person in a significant position of power and a person under their authority is a BIG no-no in my field. It would get me fired. Immediately! It would be even quicker than that if the person under my authority was 16. That is just not done! End of discussion. My supervisor would be required to dismiss me the minute he knew about it.

Now, it is clear that ex-Congressman Foley did the right thing- as soon as he was caught. He resigned. (Note: Perhaps I will have more to say about him and his being in "rehab" at another time.)

But everyone else is falling all over themselves condemning someone else. Even those lousy democrats who are using this for political purposes. Imagine that. They all know somewhere in their soul that they blew this one BIG TIME. Democrat or Republican, this one is hard to forgive. This one is for real- at the heart of moral values and taking care of the family and protecting our children and teenagers. But it was more important to keep the secrets and protect the majority power in congress and who knows what else.

Yes, this is a rant. I don't do this very often on this blog. But this is unpardonable as a political act. We can have disagreements over policies and the handling of wars or even the Geneva Convention. We can argue about lots of things and work on political compromises. But some things are far too basic- and far too important for that.

This is one of them.
