An Insight
From Barbara Brown Taylor's book, Leaving Church:

Whenever people aim to solve their conflicts with one another by turning to the Bible, defending the dried ink marks on the page becomes more vital than defending the neighbor. As a general rule, I would say that human beings never behave more badly toward one another than when they believe they are protecting God.
I have a hunch that she is on to something here. It doesn't matter who it is, when they feel that they have to defend God, God's Name, or God's truth, they can get really out of control. One look at world history would certainly give one that thought.

The sin of Adam and Eve was to try to be like God. We haven't gotten over it, have we?
