Good Question
After posting my new albums on Saturday, AC commented with an excellent question.

I wonder what it says about the state of music today when a dead man and two aging rockers like Dylan and Springsteen are creating some of the best work?

I'm not sure I really have an easy answer to that although it is intriguing.

Admittedly I don't know much about many of the more contemporary musicians, etc. But I have a hunch that one of the reasons that Dylan, Cash, and Springsteen are creating such amazing work has more to do with their ability to move beyond boundaries and musical styles. All three have been writing their own rules and own styles, moving beyond the box of whatever styles they have been known to play, that their current work should be no surprise.

Perhaps, also, their age (and old radicalism) has earned them the freedom to do what they want- a freedom that many younger artists haven't had the chance to do in this much more controlled and style driven musical world. I am sure there are contemporary examples of what these three have been able to accomplish. I don't know who they will be- and because of the much more rigid boundaries between styles of music they will have a more difficult time. But I have no doubt they are out there. I hope some of them begin to get the broader appeal and audience they deserve.
