A Command or a Promise
Fredrick Buechner has an amazing way with words and faith. Only Buechner could have gotten my attention when he said:

The final secret, I think, is this: that the words "You shall love the lord your God" become in the end less a command than a promise. And the promis is that, yes, on the weary feet of faith and the fragile wings of hope, we will come to love him at last as from the first he has loved us... And, loving him, we will come at last to love each other, too, so that, in the end, the name taped on every door will be the name of the one we love.
--Quoted in Listening to Your Life, p. 162.
It sure makes a BIG difference when you switch from a commandment to a promise. As I think about it, it is quite strange to command someone to love someone else, even God. It is strange to think of it as Love me, or else! That's not love, that's obedience out of fear. However, a promise is that if you follow God's instructions and teachings and actions (in Jesus, of course, since He is God living as a human) then you will make a remarkable discovery.

You will be in love with God.

Awesome!
