First Sunday of Lent-
Baptism leads to Temptation
At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.Mark doesn't go into the details of Jesus' temptations. He just lets us know it happens.
--Mark 1:12-13
As if we have to be told.
Just because you've been baptized doesn't mean you're going to be tempted. That'a part of being human. You WILL be tested. It's just a matter of what you are being tempted to do or not do. I believe that when we have been baptized we are part of a community. What Satan tempts us to is very simply to leave that community or to make it something it isn't which undermines what it is called to do.
In the 12-traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous, one of them reads that the fellowship of AA should not accept "outside" donations lest problems of "money, property, or prestige divert us from our primary goal."
Money, power, prestige. The traditional temptations of Jesus. The ongoing temptations of the church.
