Huh?
Yesterday's Gospel from Luke about being poor didn't get very far at some churches, I am sure. In today's Star Tribune Pastor Marc Hammond of a local mega-church was commenting on an article in the Sunday edition about his prosperity gospel. Here is part of what he had to say:

Hammond said the media and many Christians don't understand the prosperity gospel. "God says if you base your life on his covenant, these blessings are gonna overtake you; you can't do anything about it, friend. [What was once] flocks and herds is in today's parlance stocks and bonds.

"It takes wealth, folks, to establish God's covenant on this Earth. You and I will never get so spiritual that we don't need money to get more

I am overwhelmed by the belief that wealth will "overtake you" and "you can't do anything about it." I have a hunch he must be some kind of Calvinist. Wealth being for some of that theological bent a sign of God's grace. I wonder how he deals with the overwhelming number of scriptures about the poor? And what about the members of his church who aren't wealthy?

Scary. Downright scary.
