Quotes for Another Saturday

"In our civilization, and under our republican form of government, intelligence is so highly honored that it is rewarded by exemption from the cares of office."

Somehow H. L. Mencken's sharp tongue always managed to get to the point. I wonder how admired he was?
"The men the American public admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth."

Ah for the simplicity of the Italian Proverb that reminds us one of those truly painful universal truths:
"Once the game is over, the King and the pawn go back in the same box."

Finally, in this day and age of "surge" and low poll numbers, the great military man, Dwight D. Eisenhower, had an insight that it's a shame that other political leaders (of either party) have a hard time understanding.
"I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it."
