Already At Half as Many
You may- or more likely- may not have noticed the editorial comment I made over in my movie listing in the right sidebar. I only saw 4 movies in 2006. I rented no movies. I saw nothing after June when I saw the Prairie Home Companion Movie. I was embarrassed when I noticed that. Also sad. I enjoy movies- especially in the theater. I deprived myself of many hours of great (and sometimes not so great) fun. Some of it was lack of funds in a difficult financial stretch in the summer and early fall. Some of it was due to the events around my father-in-law's illness and death in July and August. Some of it was just being lazy.
Well, I'm already at half as many as in all of last year. Saturday in our treatment groups, my colleague and I showed the 1988 Michael Keaton movie, Clean and Sober. Believe it or not I had never seen it. Keaton's character, looking for a place to hide and be anonymous discovers a treatment center. He is, of course, an addict, but not able to see it. Keaton does an excellent job of portraying the personality of the addict- self-centered, grandiose, ready to blame others- not to mention use them- for his own benefit. It was an excellent movie to look at the behavioral characteristics of addicts.
Then on Sunday my daughter went to see what was the #3 movie in the country this past weekend- Children of Men. I'll post on that later in the week, but just to let you know- it deserves close attention. It is a powerful movie.
Let's hope that in 2007 I can get back on track and see movies more often. They are a great way of entertainment, challenge, and insight into the ways of life.
