Just For the Fun Of It
There's this guy that comes into the coffee shop where I do a lot of this writing. He sits there for several hours doing these incredibly detailed pencil drawings. One night I asked him if he does these for pay, work or are they just for fun? They're just for fun, he told me.

My response was wow. All that work just for the fun of it. All that incredible detail work, the shadings, the tiny touch-ups. Hour after hour doing it for no pay or recognition. Just for fun.

Then I realized that many of us do those kind of things just for the fun of it. Think of the weekend golfer who loves to be out there on the course with no hope of getting anywhere near the PGA. The practice and effort and hours. Just for the fun of it.

People doing needlework or crochet or sewing quilts to give away. Hour after hour of intense work and planning and detail. Just for the fun of it.

I thought to the pile of journal books in the basement at home where I just sat and wrote for hour after hour. Or the boxes of nature pictures I have taken over 40 years for no reason other than to explore the world a little more closely. Just for the fun of it.

I do the same thing as I sit in the same coffee shop writing these posts. Sure, there's a long shot that someone will surf by and "discover" me and lead me into big bucks. (Well, I have been known to live in my illusions for many other reasons. Why not that?) But that's not why I do it. I do it - just for the fun of it.

People who have these "just-for-the-fun-of-it" pasttimes can have quite a life. I know mine has been!
