Sunday Money- A Ride With NASCAR
I have never been a big NASCAR fan. I do know about it. I pay attention to standings and I am aware of an amazing number of the drivers (although not their sponsors.) I remember being shocked and stunned when #3 (Dale Earnhardt, Sr. for all you who don't know) was killed in the final turn at Daytona.
So when I saw the book Sunday Money by Jeff MacGregor at the local library I thought it would be a fun read. I was right. What an insight into an amazing sub-culture that travels the country watching "stock" cars race at high speeds around tracks. From its early days running a course on beach and street in Daytona, FL, NASCAR has become big, no- HUGE business. MacGregor does a top-notch job of explaining the history, coloring-in the sketches of drivers, owners, sinners, saints, martyrs and generally available characters.
MacGregor and his wife spent a year following the NASCAR circuit from Daytona in February to Miami in November. I enjoyed the ride and I certainly have a greater appreciation for what I see when I go surfing by between plays on a football Sunday. I also have some insights into the culture and sub-culture that makes NASCAR has become and will continue to develop.
Oh, if you want to know who is leading in the Race for the Cup this week, with only three races left, go here.
And, I am a fan of #8. Isn't everybody?
