Only Death and Taxes
The only sure things, I am told, are death and taxes. The way some people are talking, a new one should be added this year- that the Democrats will walk away with the upcoming mid-term elections. It sure would seem like that is a sure thing. There seems to be a real worry about the war in Iraq and the handling of it. There seems to be a real issue handed to them in the Mark Foley scandal.
But I have a fear that the one sure thing we forget is that the Democrats have an uncanny way of grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. I hope not. I want our democratic, two-party system to remain strong and possible.
George Will said the other day:
After the 1936 election, in which President Franklin Roosevelt shellacked the Republican nominee in all but two states, a humorist wrote: "If the outcome of this election hasn't taught you Republicans not to meddle in politics, I don't know what will." If after the Foley episode, the Democrats cannot gain 13 seats, they should go into another line of work.
So with five weeks to go, the game of October, along with watching baseball, will be watching the Democrats preparing to hand the election to the Republicans.
I pray I'm wrong- as if God truly supports one party over the other.
