Quitting
Jesus goes about his preaching, as usual. But people start to turn away. The miracles are getting old, especially when they require a response. Sarah at Dylan's Lectionary Blog asks a great question:
[Jesus' message is] a hard message to preach -- no easier now than it was in Jesus' or Paul's day. It's a hard message for many to receive. Who, then, can accept it?
John 6: 67-69: Jesus asked the Twelve,So what kind of person IS Peter? Why is it that he - and those who stay- are willing to, who know they have no where else to go? Why do any of us stay with Jesus, even when the church frustrates us?"You do not want to leave too, do you?"Simon Peter answered him,"Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
Sarah said it better than I can. Here's her answer:
The bottom line, I think, is that like Peter, we follow Jesus as Lord because we've seen the toll that following worldly authorities takes, and because we've glimpsed the joy, peace, and freedom that following Jesus can bring. There is much that is challenging and costly moving forward on that road, but it is what we were created to do, and it is the way to full, eternal, and abundant life.
