Love Letters
From Inward/Outward.
In the peace movement there is a lot of anger, frustration, and misunderstanding. The peace movement can write very good protest letters, but they are not yet able to write a love letter. We need to learn to write a letter to the Congress or to the President of the United States that they will want to read, and not just throw away. The way you speak, the kind of understanding, the kind of language you use should not turn people off. The President is a person like any of us.I don't know when this was originally written, but the insight that Thich Nhat Hanh has is remarkable. The Peace Movement, like any movement, can be as susceptible to human failings as any. The problem often comes when see ourselves in opposition to whatever the other side may be. That becomes an "Anti-" movement instead of a "Pro-" movement.
Can the peace movement talk in loving speech, showing the way for peace? I think that will depend on whether the people in the peace movement can be peace. Because without being peace, we cannot do anything for peace.--Source: Being Peace, Thich Nhat Hanh
But just to change the name isn't enough. We no longer can act "Anti-". We must always act "Pro-". It's not all that different from the famous words of the founder of another movement when he said that it's easy to love those you agree with. Even the greatest sinners can do that. The true mark of a "Pro-" movement is when you can trul love your enemy.
