Un Dia Sin Immigrantes-
A Day Without Immigrants
Stop for a moment today and think about this whole idea of a day without immigrants. Stop for a moment and remember the power of immigrants in our society and history.
Stop for a moment and reflect on where we would be without the history of immigration that has made our country what it is.
This is not an issue of "illegal" or "undocumented" immigrants. It is the latest example of a long and often bitter argument about whoever the current immigrant group is and what their role should be in our society. It is about whether our nation should remain a place of hope and promise for diverse peoples from diverse nations.
I am the grandson of immigrants from Eastern Europe; my wife is the granddaughter of immigrants, also from Eastern Europe. Millions of us are only first- or second-generation born in America. Quite a few millions and millions more are also sons and daughters of immigrants. It is what makes the United States such a wonderful smorgasbord of life and color and culture.
Let's not allow "national security" to change this unique and exciting aspect of who we are.
