A Good Warning
Tom at Effortless Grace posted a good warning about an activity among young people. Called, among other things, The Choking Game or Space Monkey, it is a dangerous "fun" activity. In short, according to Tom's daughter:
...a kid will ask you if you want to play the choking game. If you say yes, then the person who asked will place his hands around your neck, and squeeze, blocking your windpipe, and he won't let go until you pass out. Then...when you wake up, it's supposed to be a huge rush, and you get all weird and drunk-like.This is not some scare tactic of the religious right or anyone else. I have heard kids talk about it. Our guidance counselors in our local middle schools have been trying to get the word out.
Telecom Association, Inc (I know nothing about them) has a newsletter (registration required) in which
Our goal is to professionally gather, organize and distribute information to subscribers about the dangerous choking behavior that may be know as: airplaning, america dream game, black out game (black-out game, blackout game), chocking game (choking game), dream game (dreaming game), fainting game, flat line game (flat liner, flat-line game, flat-liner game, flatline game, flatliner game), funky chicken, hyperventilation games, knock out game (knockout game), pass out game (pass-out game, passing out game, passout game), rising sun game, something dreaming game, space cowboy, space monkey, suffocation game, suffocation roulette, teen choking game or the tingling game.Dr. Phil has some info on the situation...LINK. So does WPVI in Philadelphia...LINK.
All in all it is a dangerous situation all for the "fun" of getting high.
So, thanks to Real Live Preacher for posting the link to Tom Reindl's blog.

Kids think nothing will hurt them - this is not a drug - just one time, etc. My son was one of them. He was only 16.& He was a "good kid". He would have never tried drugs. He loved life - loved his 9 siblings - and most of all loved God. He had compassion for people. But, he learned of a game - this game he lost - lost his life. He tried the "choking game". His 11 year old brother found him hanging. His 15 year old brother cut him down. We are just past a year since his death, and it's still very hard. This game is dangerous, foolish, and mostly likely WILL cause death.
I am hoping my son's death, can save a life - maybe your child's, or your friend's.

So well said Loni. Parents, myself included, thinging we've got the bases covered on keeping our children safe and kids thinking there's nothing wrong with The Choking Game because it's 'just passing out'. Dylan, my 11 y/o son who tried the choking game by himself on October 5th in his bedroom and lost his life to it, was a an honor roll, active, athletic kid who never thought he could die from doing this. I wish you and every grieving parent, peace in your healing journey.
