Christmas Reflections Continued:
3: Christmas Day
You know that after having posted MY opinion about not having worship on Sunday simply because it was Christmas, I HAD to go to church. Put my actions where my mouth is, and all that stuff. So I went to a local church that is a four-year old church plant that has a wonderful homey feel to it. After all the noise and music and people of Christmas Eve this was fun.
There were 10 of us in church, which included the pastor, his wife and two children. We sat in a semi-circle, picked up some Christmas ornaments to use to tell each other our own Christmas stories and then had a time of sharing.
It was a nice contrast to Christmas Eve and a nice place to be together with others on Sunday morning. It wasn't a regular worship service, even for the church I was attending. We didn't sing hymns or listen to a sermon. We told the sermon in our stories. We prayed at the end, smiled a lot and wished each other well and went out into the rest of the day.
I said about Christmas Eve that I was embraced by the traditional worship of my Moravian heritage and emboldened by the contemporary-style worship at the local mega-church. On Christmas morning I was refreshed. Inspired in the basics of that word- breathed into by the Spirit as found only in community with other people.
It was a wonderful 18 hours, this Christmas Eve/Day 2005. Embraced, emboldened and inspired. What more can one expect?
(One more Christmas reflection coming, probably Thursday.)
