Verse and Chorus Go Together
Listening to NPR's Fresh Air this evening with an interview with Bruce Springsteen. He made the comment that in many of his songs the chorus is the spiritual part which he said came from Gospel music. That is where the hope and promise is. The Blues, the picture of daily life, is in the verses. The two work together.
The song that brought this up was Born in the USA. Here's an example:
(verses)The whole picture then is one of reality and hope, which is the way it should be. "Here's the way it is," followed by, "but there's more to the story than meets the eye."
I had a brother at Khe Sahn fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there he's all gone
He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go
(Chorus)
Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
There is always more to the story when hope is at the center.
That's what the Gospel is. There is always more to the story than meets the eye when God is at the center.
