Mr. Rogers For Adults
I had a moment of insight this evening. I walked into the living room while my wife was watching The History Channel. It was one of the Modern Marvel shows and it was about lumber and sawmills. It was a really interesting and intriguing show. Did you know how they made plywood? How about reclaiming ancient wood or planing lumber? Both of us sat there and enjoyed it.

Then came the moment of clarity and insight. This was Mr. Rogers for adults.

Remember how he always took those great field trips to places like the Crayola Crayon factory in Easton, Pa? It was great. Intriguing. Even mesmerizing. Thanks to the History Channel and their sister channels we don't have to give up that sense of wonder and intrugue in the world around us. That may actually be one of the best things to come out of the explosion of cable channels. We can continue to learn and explore so many different aspects of life.

Isn't that one of the great gifts of God- the desire to know how things work? The quest for knowledge and depth? Maybe that's one of the reasons Fred Rogers was such a success. He knew how to grab our attention, weave a wonderful story, and teach us at the same time. He knew that to know how things work isn't to take away the mystery, it's to give new depth to it.

What a joy!
