Station # 13: Jesus Taken Down from the Cross
Even though we know what happens on the third day, these final moments with the earthly, human Jesus are profound. Even though there will soon be a Beginning, it is the end. It is a moment of painful mortality and, again, powerlessness.
Perhaps under it all that is what the Way of the Cross may have to teach us at our most primal level. If Jesus has to go through this, so will we. No, not the particular torture and pain of The Via Dolorosa, but our own walk through life knowing that it ends being removed from life by death.
Perhaps as I go through these final couple years of my 6th decade that awareness is more real than ever. In the end what is the meaning of life- any life- if it must end this way? Today, with Jesus' family and few remaining friends, we feel the sting of death. One more Station on The Way and we must say goodbye to the earthly Way we have known and enter into a new Way that remains a mystery.
But for this one last moment, we cling to an earthly body, taking comfort when we can no longer give any. Remembering that in the great ecology of God there is meaning and purpose for life even though- or perhaps because- it ends in death.
